What are Rights?

"Right" is such an interesting word.

• If I say "left, right, left." it means one thing
• If I say "come here right now!" it means something else
• "Do the right thing" means yet another thing

And now I am telling you there is something called Child Rights. Bah! Isn't this just the way that adults confuse things?

Aha! I have a surprise for you!!! You have the RIGHT to ask for an explanation!!

Ok let's get a couple of things right first.

You want a new toy that your friend in school has. Your parents say 'no'. It is not your right to have that toy.

You want to sleep till 11 o'clock on Sunday. Your parents wake you up at 9 o'clock. This also, is not about rights.

You want to be able to bunk school, go and see a movie and then stay over at your friend's house. But of course your parents force you to go to school! This too, is not about rights.

In other words, what I am saying is, just because you WANT something does not mean you have the RIGHT to have it.

"Well then", you will say, "what are these Child Rights you are talking about?"
